Windsor Riverfront

Windsor, VT is a community of 4,000 people.  Until the mid-1980s a 70-acre parcel in the heart of its downtown, located between the railroad line and the Connecticut River, was home to two larger manufacturing facilities that employed over 1,500 people.  Also located within those 70 acres were homes, shops, and smaller manufacturing facilities.

Today the Windsor Improvement Corporation is leading an effort to revitalize this section of Windsor's designated downtown.  The project's redevelopment goals include:

·        Create an active mixed-use district on the underutilized waterfront

·        Create jobs and increase the tax base

·        Leverage views of downtown steeples, Mount Ascutney and the Connecticut River to attract new business and visitors

·        Increase housing opportunities and options in the Upper Valley

·        Expanding retail opportunities and connect existing Main Street to the riverfront

·        Generate tourist activity through riverfront recreation, artisan studios, a unique retail experience, and a hotel/conference center.

Projects in development:

·        A nanotechnology center in the former Cone Blanchard facility that is home to Seldon Technologies and will be home to a nanotechnology-related incubator and a National Center for Precision Manufacturing,

·        A center for green building technology, alternative energy, and resource recovery, a joint project with the Houston Advanced Research Center, will also be located in the area which is already home a number of high end wood products manufacturers.

Mixed-use and light industrial development opportunities are located throughout the riverfront redevelopment area.  This area directly linked to the existing Main Street commercial core.  Visitors downtown can walk down the newly extended Depot Street, shop at the new stores, restaurants, and artists studios, and continue on to the riverfront park.  Opportunities include:

·        65,000 square feet of new light industrial space

·        66 new housing units

·        35,000 square feet of new retail, restaurant, artisan studio space

·        72 room hotel/conference center
